Qualified Psychotherapist,
I see psychotherapy as a liberating journey of self discovery which works at best when accompanied by a skilled, thoughtful and compassionate therapist, prepared to get alongside you in whatever dilemmas life is bringing up. It is a healing relationship out of which insight, compassion and connection to others emerges. I am interested in many kinds of emotional and psychological issues including personal relationships, existential or spiritual crises, grief, trauma, depression and anxiety.
My approach
I first began therapeutic work as an Occupational Therapist in NHS Adult Mental Health, working for 16 years with both individuals and groups. My desire to work more creatively at greater depth lead me to train as a psychotherapist.
I integrate a psychodynamic approach with the humanistic alongside a longtime interest and training in the depth psychology of Carl Jung. His approach can bring a wider sense of meaning that is not just about the impact of the past, but future focussed and centred on searching for meaning in life as a whole. He saw the power of imagination and dreams as portals to the soul. When we are driven by powerful forces that feel beyond our control we recognise that we are not masters of our psyches and that more unconscious forces also have the power to help us understand ourselves.
In talking with a therapist light can be shed on the things you are struggling with. There is a movement between past, present and future, an exploration of inner experiences and how they impact on our outer worlds and relationships. Through this we can often be freed up from painful locked in patterns to make better, more liberating choices about our lives. Sometimes looking at the therapeutic relationship itself becomes a helpful tool to furthering the understanding of problems.
I have also worked for many years with refugees and asylum seekers who experience themselves often at the very edges of society. My understanding of intercultural therapy, trauma and working with the somatic experiences of the body have developed through this work which continues to move me very profoundly.
If you think psychotherapy or Jungian analysis may be able to help you, please do contact me for an initial session to discuss things further. I work in Nailsworth 45 minutes north of Bath and Bristol, 25 minutes south of Gloucester.
